When to Use Triple Pass

Triple Pass is a play-action passing play that should be used when the safety (ies) start to cheat up in order to provide run support to the perceived point of attack.  When those safeties start to blow up your base triple option play, it is time to make them pay the price by using this …

Switch Block Vs. Two-High Safeties

In order to prevent a disaster when running your triple option play vs. two-high safeties with the corners rolled up, I suggest that the playside WR and playside A-back make a “switch” call in order to exchange responsibilities on the play.  This will prevent the possibility of the rolled corner immediately attacking the pitch-back on …

Dive Triple Option

This is a triple option play with a passing option. It is very important that the QB makes his decision on who is getting the football very quickly so that you are not penalized for having an illegal man downfield.  This play begins looking like a regular triple option run play.  However, the backside A-Back, …

Identifying The Action Key Defender In The Triple Option

The action key defender is defined as the first defensive lineman INSIDE of the dive key defender.  In the diagram shown, the dive key is the first defensive lineman on or outside the play side OT (#1).  The pitch key defender is the “next defensive player” outside the dive key (#2).  So, the action key …

Lead Speed Option

On this play, I like to read the first defender passed the DE.  This gives the QB ample time to attack the perimeter with force.  The B-Back is looking for the first wrong color to block (make sure he does not block the pitch key).

CUT BLOCKING

Cut Blocking plays a huge role in our offensive blocking schemes.  The B-Back and both A-Backs are taught to be great cut blockers in order to give the ball carrier a chance to take it to the house.  When executed properly and under control, the cut block could be a very devastating block to inflict …

STACK READS

I believe that it is very important coaches teach their option QBs to “read the stack” instead of teaching them to avoid it altogether.  Many coaches believe that it is just too tough for their QB to read a stack on the base triple option play.  I disagree.  The key to teaching your QB to …

MIDLINE OPTION

Midline Option is a great play when you are facing a very tough 3-tech DT.  QB reads this 3-tech and either gives the ball to the diving B-Back or keeps it himself as he replaces the 3-Tech who has pinched in to tackle the B-Back.  The PS A-Back goes into orbit motion but on the …

TRIPLE PASS

Triple Pass is called when your coaches up in the booth find that the defense is starting to either stuff the tackle box with 9 defenders or their safeties start to cheat up in order to lend run support. When this happens, man coverage is the order of the day!  Take advantage of this one-on-one coverage …

PISTOL-FLEX BASE FORMATION

The majority of plays that we run from the Pistol-Flex will be out of our base formation.  Notice that it is a balanced formation that has the potential to have four receivers out for a pass immediately after the snap.  Though we are a run-oriented offense, this formation could also be used by other teams …
